Ron Yoshimoto Orton Gillingham

Like MSL, Ron Yoshimoto OG is founded on the Orton Gillingham model. It provides an explicit, systematic approach to teaching reading and writing. Our team are trained in either the MSL OG or Ron Yoshimoto OG – both are evidenced-based approaches and will achieve the best outcomes for your child.

What is Dyslexia?

At Read Write Success, we believe that if a student can’t learn to read the way we teach, then we need to change our teaching so they CAN learn to read!

Dyslexia is considered a specific learning disorder with impairment in reading including possible deficits in word reading accuracy, reading rate or fluency and reading comprehension.  Other areas can be affected including spelling, memory and organisation. People with dyslexia CAN learn and it is widely publicised the best approach to teach a student with dyslexia is through an explicit, synthetic phonics approach. It is estimated that up to five per cent of the population are thought to have dyslexia.

Dyslexia isn’t a symptom of low intelligence. Richard Branson, Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Edison – highly intelligent and creative people – with dyslexia. For more information click the link!  Dyslexia – Better Health Channel

Do we need an assessment before we join RWS?

No you don’t! Some of our students have had a formal diagnosis before they see us but many do not. It is completely up to you! Whatever you choose, our diagnostic assessment will give us enough information to support your child.

Receiving a diagnosis can be really helpful for some families because it gives them answers they are searching for.  An assessment also provides information to the school about their child’s specific needs and makes recommendations for classroom accommodations.

How long is a session?

Our sessions are 45 minutes online or 50 minutes face to face. We allow time at the end of the session to talk with parents about the work we’ve covered and to answer any questions.

How many sessions will my child need?

Every student is different and will have different needs so it is difficult to say how long they may need our support. We set goals after our initial assessment and review progress throughout the term. We will keep you updated and well informed so you can make the best choice for your child.

Where can my child be assessed for dyslexia?

In QLD you should ask you child’s school or speak to your paediatrician. SPELD does offer assessments as do many child psychologists.  Please note an Optometrist CAN NOT diagnose dyslexia. Dyslexia is NOT a visual problem, it is a neurological difference.

What are decodable books?

We love decodable books and use them as part of our sessions. Decodable books allow students to read words based on the phonics they have learnt. It does not rely on guessing or using picture clues. See the resource list for recommended books.
